Robert L. Ashenhurst, ACM Editor-in-Chief
Institute for Computer Research
The University of Chicago
Chicago, Ill. 60637

Dear Dr. Ashenhurst:

\JI sent a letter to be considered for publication in the Communications
nearly two months ago. It was sent "out for review" a month ago. I submitted
my comments as a letter rather than as an article because I felt strongly about the
issues, I wanted quick discussion, and felt that the material had been sufficiently
"reviewed" here.

Here's a sample of opinion: Don Knuth disagreeed with the perspective but
said " I think it would provoke a useful discussion if you published your
letter"; Terry Winograd and Balint Domolkii agreed with the basic ideas
but disagreed on details; J Strother Moore and Daniel Friedman agreed
completely; and John McCarthy thought "this blast will have little effect"
(How prophetic!!). Several students on the Course Evaluation Committee here at
Stanford are quite sympathetic and are interested in seeing the response.
I am currently teaching a course based on my approaches and would like the
students to see how the community reacts sometime before the
course is over.

It appears as if the reviewing process is going to be quite lengthy, and
thus if no response is forthcoming by March 15, I will withdraw my letter
and submit it elsewhere.
